Let’s Make Apple Pie!
Over the Labor Day weekend we visited Eckert’s Farm for their annual AppleFest.
The boys had so much fun searching the trees for the perfect additions to our pie. Of course, we had to so some taste testing. Jonathan apples are fantastic. The Jonathan apple is a medium-sized sweet apple, with a touch of acid and a tough but smooth skin. And, once you wipe the dust of them, they’re ready to eat right off the tree. Yum! After filling our bags with apples, we had to find something to do with our delicious bounty. An apple pie was in order. It’s a good thing Grandma was in town to help us out! There’s nothing better than cooking with Grandma.
Get the kids involved in the kitchen at an early age, and start cooking up a healthy appreciation for the foods they eat!
Here are some great ideas to keep your little one engaged in the kitchen while you both prepare a homemade pie:
- Talk about the different types of apples or fruits there are and where they grow.
- Visit a local farm and pick your fresh fruit right off the trees!
- Let your little ones haul their harvest to and from (but, be ready to carry that bag. They always seem to tire after ten steps or so 🙂
- Kids can wash, slice, stir, scoop, shake in spices and even help with rolling out the pie crust.
- Tasting is always encouraged!
